Exede Internet Service

Profile and History

Exede is a Satellite Internet Service provider that was started in 2012, by its parent company ViaSat. The introduction of Exede was brought with the launch of ViaSat-1, which was the highest capacity satellite to be launched into orbit at the time. This new satellite enabled Exede to offer broadband internet speeds to rural America with speeds up to 25Mbps in select areas. This is a dramatic departure from the average 1 Mbps speed that WildBlue satellite internet service provided prior to its acquisition by Viasat Inc. in 2009. There are currently more than 687,000 customers utilizing Exede’s internet service in the United States.

Exede Facts:

  • The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) recognized Exede for providing service that was above and beyond what its advertised internet speeds offered.
  • Exede offers some customers plans that include the Liberty Pass, which allows them to continue browsing the internet at speeds between 1-5 Mbps after data allowances are exceeded.

Recent News

  • Viasat will be launching a second satellite that is double in size later this year. This will double the capacity of Exede's network, boosting speeds, and data consumption allowances nationwide. This satellite is anticipated to have more throughput capacity than all other satellites in the sky combined. ViaSat is also aggressively pursuing commercial and government deal,s having recently inked agreements to provide broadband for AirForce One and American Airlines. The company was already the exclusive provider of in-flight Internet service for JetBlue.

Coverage Areas

Exede has satellite internet coverage across most of the United States. There are a number of plans available depending on location, but the only real requirements, contingent upon availability of beams is a clear view of the southern sky.
